Oh, and Another Thing…
Little notes on what I’ve read, bought, and noticed lately
Does it feel like summer just disappeared? I looked at the calendar and realized Labor Day is basically next week. How?? I always think spring and summer drag on since there aren’t many holidays off compared to fall/winter… but maybe not.
Anyway, here are some random things from lately. And when I say lately, I really mean this summer.
Reading
I binge-read two (yes, two) Frieda McFadden books. They’re so easy to get through, and the little twist at the end always keeps me turning the pages.
The first one I picked up was Ward D. I grabbed it at the library when I took my son to find his summer book. The whole story takes place in a psychiatric hospital, where a medical student is spending the night, questioning her sanity and everything happening around her. The twist at the end? Did not see that coming.
After that, I was hooked. I wanted more of that suspense-thriller vibe, so I picked up The Perfect Son. I didn’t enjoy it quite as much, found it a bit more predictable, but it’s still a good pick if you’re in the mood for something quick and easy.
Garage Sale
I don’t know what’s gotten into me, but this year every time I see a garage sale in my neighborhood, I stop to check it out. I never used to do that, but now I find myself craving old vintage pieces that I think fit perfectly with the minimal style in my house.
The other day, on my way home from the store, I spotted a small garage sale. I almost didn’t stop because it looked tiny, but I’m glad I did. I found a set of Nikko plates and bowls (made in Japan, which of course caught my eye right away). Thirty pieces for $10. Total steal. And I love them. Five-years-ago me would’ve only bought plain white dishes, but current me loves the fun design.
Watching
It’s hard for me to get into shows or movies lately, I lose interest so fast. Do you know what I mean? It has to be really good, but when it is, I’m hooked and have to binge the whole thing.
I started Sweetbitter and liked the behind-the-scenes look at a fancy restaurant, plus the story of a girl trying to fit in and prove herself. Then I watched Hunting Wives. Honestly, I only started it because I had nothing else to watch and I recognized Malin Åkerman (side note: was she wearing a wig? Her hair looked kind of… off). Either way, the show was entertaining enough that I finished it in one weekend. Some people call it an erotic thriller and murder mystery (oops), but I actually enjoyed it and hope there’s a season two.
Eating
There’s this Greek Chicken and Rice recipe I’ve made at least three times this summer. Probably not your typical summer dish, but it’s so good. I use my smart cooker (on sale right now, by the way) whenever I can because it makes life easier, and the step-by-step instructions are a lifesaver.
Nails
I’ve been using Dazzle Dry nail polish for over a year now, ever since I stopped getting gel nails. I love that it lasts a full week on me. They have so many shades, but I keep going back to Chiffon Moment. It’s the perfect nude, it looks like you have nothing on, but your nails still look polished and shiny.
And that’s it, just some random things I’ve been reading, finding, watching, eating, and loving lately. I’ll probably have more soon, because let’s be honest… there’s always one more thing.
